The homeowners wanted one landscape to support two very different experiences: comfortably entertaining larger groups and finding privacy and calm at home. Creating separation from neighboring properties was just as important as making the backyard feel open and welcoming.
A reconfigured staircase improves the transition from the basement walkout and driveway to the lawn below, while a Hornbeam hedge creates a living privacy screen. The bluestone patio provides space for gathering, and a dedicated yoga circle introduces a quieter destination within the garden.
Layered planting softens the architectural elements and strengthens the sense of enclosure throughout the backyard. Flowering perennials bring seasonal color and movement, while the privacy hedge and surrounding garden create a more intimate setting for both gatherings and everyday retreat.

We approached this landscape as both a gathering place and a private sanctuary. Thoughtful screening, natural materials and distinct spaces for entertaining and quiet retreat create a backyard that can shift effortlessly with the way the homeowners want to live outdoors.
