FEATURES: Prairie garden, habitat planting, seed mixes, privacy and family play areas
The Vision
For this newly built modern farmhouse, the homeowners wanted privacy, room for children to play and a landscape that would actively create habitat. Rather than surrounding the home with conventional lawn, the vision called for a more immersive landscape rooted in native plants.
The Design
The new-construction site provided an opportunity to shape the landscape alongside the home’s clean architecture. Defined family spaces closer to the house transition into broader prairie planting, allowing the design to become progressively looser and more natural as it moves outward.
The Landscape
Native perennials, grasses, shrubs and understory trees create layers of habitat around the home. Seeded areas extend the planting beyond conventional garden beds, introducing movement, seasonal change and ecological value at a scale that complements the larger property.
Plant Highlights: Echinacea, Baptisia, Little Bluestem, Butterfly Weed, False Sunflower, Amsonia, Blazing Star, Oakleaf Hydrangea, Buttonbush, Redbud and Bottlebrush Buckeye.
This project reflects our belief that contemporary design and ecological landscapes belong together. Prairie planting, native species and family-centered spaces ground the modern farmhouse in its setting while creating a landscape that offers beauty, habitat and room to live.
