The homeowners wanted their new-build home to feel established rather than newly landscaped. A dedicated grilling and gathering area, colorful foundation gardens and mature planting would bring warmth and character to the property while remaining appropriate for its HOA setting.
A circular natural-cleft bluestone patio bordered in clay brick creates a distinct outdoor room, while graphite outcroppings connect the hardscape to the gardens. Along the property line, the grade was carefully adjusted to improve wet conditions while preserving existing spruce trees.
Mature trees provide immediate scale, while layered shrubs and flowering perennials soften the home’s foundation and bring seasonal color throughout the property. Native species are woven into the planting to create a garden that feels established, natural and connected to the larger landscape.
Plant Highlights: Carolina Allspice, Joe Pye Weed, Swamp Milkweed, Butterfly Weed, Blazing Star, Sweetbay Magnolia, Oakleaf Hydrangea, Redbud, Hawthorn, Dogwood and White Pine.
