Permeable bluestone and brick patio, walkways, stormwater management, woodland trail, circular no-mow lawn and extensive native planting
The homeowners wanted their backyard to feel like a private park, with room to wander, relax and give their dog space to play. Native plants were central to the vision, along with a thoughtful solution for the substantial stormwater moving through the steep property.
Water management became part of the landscape rather than something hidden from view. Permeable bluestone and brick surfaces, grading and winding pathways work with the site’s natural drainage, while a circular no-mow lawn creates a simple clearing within the more immersive garden.
A diverse palette of native perennials, grasses, sedges, shrubs and trees was selected for changing interest throughout the year. Bloom, foliage, seed heads and winter structure create a garden that evolves with the seasons while providing valuable habitat for birds and pollinators.
Plant Highlights: Blue Lobelia, Blazing Star, Obedient Plant, Little Bluestem, Joe Pye Weed, Purple Coneflower, Turtlehead, Pennsylvania Sedge, Christmas Fern, Oakleaf Hydrangea, Winterberry, New Jersey Tea, Fothergilla, Bottlebrush Buckeye, Serviceberry, Redbud and Dogwood.
This landscape shows how thoughtful design can work with nature rather than against it. Winding paths, permeable stonework and layered native gardens transform a challenging hillside into a peaceful place to wander, gather and experience the changing seasons.
