The Vision

This Chagrin Falls landscape was designed to create an immersive outdoor retreat for the entire family. The homeowners envisioned water as the centerpiece of the backyard, along with a larger deck for gathering, a private outdoor shower and hot tub area, and a more usable play space at the top of the property.

The Design

The waterfall and pond were positioned on axis with the home’s windows, creating a strong connection between the interior and landscape. Indian Creek boulders, natural bluestone and copper details give the space a grounded character, while a grid-style patio adds structure. Regrading and selective structural work reshaped the site, with natural stairs connecting the lower garden to a leveled play area above, allowing the landscape to unfold from one experience into the next.

The Landscape

Layers of native and regionally appropriate trees, shrubs and perennials soften the hardscape and surround the new outdoor living spaces with changing texture, bloom and seasonal interest.

Native Plant Highlights: Bottlebrush Buckeye, Dogwood, Eastern Hemlock, Smooth Hydrangea, Sweetbay Magnolia, Carolina Allspice, Oakleaf Hydrangea, Liatris/Blazing Star, Summersweet and Dwarf White Pine.

Designed as a true backyard retreat, this landscape transformation combines natural stone, water, native planting and layered outdoor living spaces into one cohesive experience. The result is a beautiful, highly personal landscape that feels both refined and naturally at home in its Northeast Ohio setting.
